The train brought us 30 minutes outside Berlin, Germany. The town was small and resembled that of a Christmas Village. Hungry and cold, we walked into the last place open: a tiny restaurant and pub so homey you would have thought we interrupted a family Christmas dinner. The small restaurant was decorated in the most intricate and beautiful details. There were lace table cloths, candles, and garland everywhere. After dinner we decided to explore the town. Snow started to fall as we walked the Cobblestone streets. Houses and buildings were pushed close together. A large pine tree stood in the town square. A lit up star was in almost every window. It felt as if those who had the star meant to share the warmth and joy of the season with all those who passed by. Ever since that trip, I hang a star in my own window.
Here are the instructions on how to make your own Christmas star. Whether you want to make one for yourself or create a gift for someone else, it is a fun and easy holiday craft. Have fun!
Materials: square (same length on all sides) decorative paper, pencil/pen, glue, scissors, string and whole punch (optional)
Turn paper over to the side you will not have showing (most will be white) and fold the paper vertically and horizontally in the middle
Fold in half both ways diagonally
This is what it should look like
Flip paper over and mark with your pencil/pen a little more than halfway from the middle on all four sides (where the dots are)
Cut from the edge up to the dot on all sides
Fold the flaps in all four corners as shown in the picture above
It should look like this once all flaps are folded
Glue every other side on the folded flaps. In the picture above the glue would go on each decorated flap
Place the unglued flap over the glued flap
The first part of your star is ready
Now repeat these steps to make another star like the picture above
With glue you will put them together as shown in the picture above
Here is your star!
Try different sizes and colors. I find these make for great homemade ornaments and gifts for Christmas. To be able to hang your star you will need to whole punch the top and tie string through.
